Work in the proximity of electrical lines

Safety code for construction

Many organizations, notably Hydro Québec and the CNESST require that construction equipment must be equipped with a range limiting device that blocks the system to avoid contact with electrical wires and any environmental obstacles. You thus have to conform to the « Safety code for construction ».

Did you know?

The electrical current of high voltage wires can easily be in contact with objects and people that are not located at a secure distance!

Distance to respect:

When jobs are carried out near power lines, all people, parts, equipment or machinery parts must be :

  • More than 3m of the electrical lines that are less than 125 kV;
  • More than 5m of the electrical line that are 125 to 250 kV:
  • More than 8m of the electrical line that are 250 to 550 kV;
  • More than 12m of the electrical line that are more than 550 kV.

What is a range limiting device?

The range limiting device is a safety device and assistance for equipment operators. It is a monitoring device which supplies the operator precise indication on the positioning of the machine in respect to environmental obstacles which will protect the operator. It therefore limits the risk of the machine to come into contact with environmental obstacles (Electrical wires, walls, ceilings, etc.).

Inspection of your greasing system!

Step 1: Daily summary inspection

First, a summary visual inspection should be made on a daily basis by the operator;

  • Check if there is a thin layer of fresh grease at each lubrication point
  • Make sure all hoses and adapters are in place and not leaking
  • Check the electronic card to make sure there are no alarms
  • Do a test cylce (additional cycle button) on the electronic card to make sure that the pump works well and that the pressure rises on the pressure gauge of the pump

Summary inspection ensures that once the equipment is up and running, everything is functional. No need to turn back for a minor break and lose production time.

Step 2: Full inspection in fall and spring

Afterwardfall and spring are key seasons for full inspections. Fall for snow removal equipment and spring for construction and paving equipment.

Scheduled inspection will allow you to detect and resolve problems before the work. Keeping your equipment in optimal condition can be more productive!

Who does the inspection?

Safety advice to prevent accidents between pedestrians and heavy vehicles on construction sites!

Blind spots of heavy vehicles

Blind spots are a great danger for pedestrians and other road users, because these areas of the road are outside the driver's field of vision. On construction site, the optimal conditions are not always met.

This is why it is always good to remember the safety tips to prevent accidents between pedestrians and heavy vehicles on construction sites!

Here are some tips to better take blind spots into account and avoid accidents

DO YOU DRIVE A HEAVY VEHICLE?

Anticipation and verification

When driving, be aware of people walking near your vehicle, especially at urban intersections.

• Monitor and anticipate the movements of people.

• Don't assume that your maneuvers are predictable.

• Make sure your mirrors are in good condition, clear, and properly adjusted.

• Keep your headlights on at all times (to see and be visible).

• Use turn signals at intersections to signal your intentions.

• Be careful when making a right turn at an intersection and your vehicle must encroach into the adjacent lane or the shoulder to make the turn.

ARE YOU NEAR A HEAVY VEHICLE?

Make sure you are seen: a rule that can save your life

When driving near a heavy vehicle, always make eye contact with the driver. Otherwise, assume he hasn't seen you.

• Avoid being in the blind spots of a heavy vehicle.

• Make sure its driver has seen you before crossing in front of it. If in doubt, let it go.

• Pay attention to vehicle turn signals at intersections.

• Be visible (light-colored clothing, reflective strips, etc.).

• Remember that the driver will not hear you if you try to signal your presence.

Unloading a dump truck without overturning - Work safely

Stability of dump trucks and trailers

Several fatalities and serious accidents in the transport industry have been caused by overturning trucks and dump trailers. These accidents seem to result in particular from a lack of knowledge of the principles of stability linked to the use of a dump vehicle.

The right ways to work in a secure fashion.

Loading correctly

• Respect the maximum load of your dumper

• Distribute the load in a way that it is balanced and not all accumulated in the rear.

• Park on grounds that are totally flat to prevent displacing the load in the dumper.

• Lubricate the dumper for sticky materials (i.e.: humid earth, asphalt etc.).

• Cover the trailer for all hot materials (asphalt).

Unloading correctly

• Align the hitch before you begin to unload

• Observe the grounds before unloading: There are no slopes, stability of the ground, there are no holes, and make sure when opening the tailgate is free of all obstacles (i.e.: walls, electrical wires, etc.)

• Maintain a secure distance in the case of side by side unloading.

• Always deflate the pneumatic suspensions.

• Remain in the cabin and leave your seatbelt on at all times while unloading.

• Wait till the dumper has completely lowered back to the correct position before leaving.

What to do if the load does not dump?

• Slowly lower the dumper and find another method to unload

• Do not make back and forth movements, jolt on the jack of the truck or Try to drive off while the dumper is loaded to try to unload because this increases your chances of overturning.

Many tools are available to help the driver's vigilance;

Save time and money with Sentinel.

OKO Long Life - Long lasting corrosion protection on all rims

OKO Life Long tire and rims life extender

Designed for Mining and Construction vehicles where rims corrode and tires are worn out in months

Not a sealant!

Life Long is a free-flowing liquid formulated in a whole new way, incorporating cutting-edge technology. The nanotechnology lays down a thin layer, cleaning and protecting steel or alloy rims. UV component brightly shows up bead/o-ring/rim leaks and tire slits, in the workshop for rapid action

Liquid prevents air loss, cools and conditions the rubber:

On average, achieving 30% longer tire life

OKO LifeLong is a major step forward in heavy-duty wheel and tyre protection. It does more for both than any previous generation of product.

The weak points of similar products often include the lack of protection for static rims from the moisture-heavy air inside the tyre; the inability to protect alloys; either no anti-freeze to cool the tires or harmful types of product being used; no clear indication of leaks; and the depletion of product that can lead to instructions to top up by 20% after a time..

Life Long overcomes all of those issues and is the natural choice for operators. It will not clog valves or TPMS, and it is biodegradable. The carboxylate technology of the liquid even succeeds in cleaning away pre-existing rust so rims can look better after use than before! Nitrogen fill can be used after fitting Life Long, but actually why would you bother with the extra expense when this product generates such a massive improvement in tire life?

OKO Life Long is primarily designed for use off the highway, and only in tubeless tires. It can also be used on road for heavy trucks and service vehicles, having observed OKO’s recommended dosage quantities.
